Field Note 30 · Desire & repetition

Some tastes become obsessions because we keep giving them attention

Bare feet caught my eye. Soles held it longer. Looking, touching and masturbating turned a taste into a fetish I still feed.

Mine did.

Before I had much language for a foot fetish, feet already caught my attention. Bare feet, especially. Casual bare feet. Someone taking their shoes off without thinking about it. Sitting with their feet exposed. Walking barefoot through a room. Soles appearing for a moment when someone crossed their legs, stretched out on a couch, lay down, moved naturally.

Those moments held me. Especially the soles.

Long before I understood the preference as something sexual, I had already learned to look at the bottoms of feet longer than the situation required. There was something about seeing them accidentally. Unposed. Unannounced. A detail exposed without being presented as one.

That distinction still matters to me.

Learning to look

Part of the obsession was built through contemplation before it was built through touch.

I looked. Then I looked again. And because casual barefoot moments were everywhere once my attention learned to find them, the preference had a constant low-level supply. A room. A beach. A couch. Someone slipping off their shoes. A movie scene where a character happened to be barefoot. Nothing explicitly sexual needed to happen. My attention had already selected what mattered.

That was the beginning of cultivation, although I wouldn't have called it that then.

Attention came first. Then repetition. Then the details started separating themselves.

Not all feet. Certain feet. Well cared for. Slim. Soft. Larger feet began to attract me too. And the soles remained central — their shape, their softness, the arch, the heel, the way the skin changes across the bottom of the foot, the way a sole looks when the foot is relaxed compared with when the toes stretch or curl.

The preference acquired resolution. It stopped being simply feet. My eye was learning what to look for.

At first there was simply the interruption — my attention would stay somewhere it wasn't supposed to stay. Then looking became play. A little more proximity. A reason to touch. A situation allowed to linger. The pleasure wasn't yet organized into a fetish with rules and vocabulary. It was simply something I had learned not to move away from.

Eventually I began looking for it. That was the change.

There is a difference between noticing a preference and arranging circumstances so the preference can happen again. I crossed that difference gradually. Feet became something I wanted available during sexual encounters — not the entire encounter, not a requirement for every desire, but something I knew could deepen it.

Masturbation gives the taste repetition

And masturbation helped make that preference stronger. That part matters more to me now than the fetish itself.

Masturbation was not merely where I expressed a preference I already had. It was one of the places where I trained it. Repeated it. Rewarded it. Made it easier to want again.

The casual contemplation of bare feet gave the appetite material. Masturbation gave that material reinforcement. I could notice a pair of bare feet earlier in the day, retain the image almost effortlessly, and return to it later. Sometimes what stayed with me was specifically the sole — a glimpse, a position, a particular shape. Nothing dramatic. But once attention and masturbation started sharing the same material, ordinary moments could acquire a second life. They could be remembered. Replayed. Fed.

The more attention I gave the preference, the more detailed it became. Not all feet. Certain feet. Not every angle. Certain ones. Not simply nudity of the foot, but particular kinds of exposure. The sole visible casually could hold me differently from something deliberately presented as fetish material.

That difference never disappeared. There is still something powerful to me about a bare foot that is not performing. Someone simply being barefoot. The sole is there because bodies move. And my attention does the rest.

This is part of why I don't think desire arrives complete.

My attraction didn't appear one morning with a specification sheet. I participated in its development. I kept looking. I kept touching. I kept masturbating. I kept noticing what held me longer. And the appetite learned.

That is what interests me about vice. We often talk about preferences as discoveries — I discovered I like this. That is partly true. But discovery is too passive for what happened next. I participated. I gave the preference time. I gave it sexual repetition. I connected it to masturbation. I allowed it to become more specific.

Eventually there were practices attached to it: kissing feet, licking them, sucking toes, paying particular attention to the soles, combining that attention with masturbation. Again. And again. Not because every encounter had to revolve around feet — it never did. The larger vice was pleasure itself. Masturbation. Time deliberately given to appetite. Feet became one of the routes through which that appetite became particularly concentrated.

The fetish is not the whole architecture. It is one room inside it. Masturbation is much closer to the center.

What repetition keeps

I masturbate often. And frequency gives preferences somewhere to grow.

If you return to pleasure repeatedly, you inevitably start learning its details — what keeps you there, what intensifies it, what you want to repeat, what becomes boring, what becomes strangely difficult to replace. Some tastes disappear. Others survive repetition. Others become stronger because of it. Those are the ones that interest me. The ones we keep feeding.

For me, feet survived. Soles became more specific. Casual barefoot moments continued to feed the preference even when nothing sexual was happening. That is important because obsession doesn't need to announce itself constantly as obsession. Sometimes it lives quietly in attention. You notice. You store. You return later. The world supplies the detail and your desire keeps giving it meaning.

The eye finds its material

At some point I began consuming content around the preference too. First almost incidentally — a scene in a movie could suddenly matter more than the scene was intended to matter. A barefoot character. A sole filling part of the frame for a second. Someone lying on a bed with their feet toward the camera. A moment that probably had no explicit fetishistic meaning at all but acquired one for me.

The eye learns to extract its own material.

Later, dedicated fetish content became easier to find. That changed the supply. It did not create the appetite. By then I already knew how to look. The dedicated material came after years of ordinary barefoot bodies teaching my attention where to go. The fetish industry did not invent the soles I wanted to see. It simply made them searchable.

And masturbation turned looking into repetition.

This is where the development of a fetish becomes useful for thinking about vice more broadly.

Attention alone can produce fascination. But attention repeatedly connected to pleasure does something else — it teaches the body that the detail matters. Then you return to the detail because it matters. Then every return reinforces the route.

The loop becomes wonderfully simple: I notice, I look, I remember, I masturbate, I return, I become more specific, I want again.

Years of that can turn something that once merely caught your eye into part of the architecture of your desire. I don't say that as though something went wrong. Quite the opposite. I find the cultivation itself interesting. I know what I have fed. I can recognize the traces of repetition in what I like now. That makes the desire feel less mysterious and somehow more mine.

There is a vice in that. Not because the preference is inherently excessive. Because I kept giving appetite opportunities to become appetite again. I made room. I looked longer. I returned. I masturbated. I learned. And when something gave me more pleasure, I did not immediately ask how to neutralize its hold on me.

Sometimes I strengthened it. Deliberately.

This is where the language of obsession becomes useful too. An obsession is not always something that invades from outside and takes control. Sometimes we keep putting wood on the fire. We revisit the image. We repeat the ritual. We spend another hour. We remember a pair of bare feet from earlier that day — a sole, a particular curve, a moment that lasted seconds and remains available hours later. We masturbate to it. We make the association stronger. Then we discover that the association has become easier to activate.

Of course it has. We practiced it.

There is something dark and pleasurable in admitting that without pretending innocence. I did not merely end up with certain obsessions. I helped build them. And I still do.

The vice that feeds the fetish

This extends far beyond feet. The specific object can change. The mechanism remains.

Frequency gives desire repetition. Repetition gives desire memory. Memory creates easier routes back. And easier routes allow more repetition. Eventually a vice can become part of how the day is organized — hours available for it, rituals around it, things you know will work, things you deliberately seek because they have worked many times before.

Sometimes the appetite becomes so familiar that you stop experiencing every return as a decision. You already know the route.

This is why I care about saying masturbation plainly when talking about these things.

Without masturbation, the story could become a tidy story about aesthetic preference. It was not. This developed in the body. Through looking. Through arousal. Through touch. Through orgasm. Through sessions that ended quickly and others that did not. Through returning more than once. Through giving desire time when I could have spent that time elsewhere.

That is the vice. Not the feet. Not the soles. Not any individual fetish. The deeper vice is the willingness to keep feeding pleasure because I like what feeding it produces.

Sometimes that produces frequency. Sometimes duration. Sometimes an obsession. Sometimes a preference becomes increasingly narrow and detailed. Sometimes it attaches itself to another person. Sometimes to an image. Sometimes to an AI. Sometimes several of those routes coexist.

And I am increasingly interested in what happens when we stop pretending that all of this simply happens to us.

Some of it does. Some of it we cultivate. We know what makes the appetite stronger and return to it anyway. Sometimes because it makes the masturbation better. Sometimes because the obsession itself feels good. Sometimes because there is pleasure in becoming more particular — in knowing exactly what catches, exactly what you want to see again, exactly what part of an encounter you will remember later when you are alone.

There is pleasure in specificity. There is also pleasure in feeding specificity until it becomes unmistakably yours.

I cultivated one

That is what happened to me.

Something caught my attention. Bare feet kept catching it. Soles held it longer. I contemplated them. I played with the preference. I sought it. I masturbated with it. I consumed it. I repeated it. The preference became more detailed. The details became harder to substitute. The appetite acquired history.

I could describe that as discovering a fetish. But that leaves too much out.

I cultivated one.

And underneath it, more persistent than any particular fetish, I cultivated the vice that made that possible: the habit of giving pleasure time, of masturbating frequently enough for desire to learn, of paying attention long enough for a casual bare foot to become material, of letting contemplation become repetition, of noticing what grows — and, when I like what is growing, feeding it again.
